Nicolas Maillart Franc de Pied 2015 is a single Cuvée (Les Coupes) plot, a 100% Pinot Noir single-varietal, with a limited production of less than 4000 bottles per year. The peculiarity of this Champagne is that it is obtained from “free-root” vines, that is, without American rootstocks, as was the Champagne vineyard before the phylloxera crisis. Only 2 cuvées have this characteristic: Nicolas Maillart Franc de Pied and Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises.

A winemaking tradition dating back to 1753, where ancestors worked the vine in the nearby village of Chamery. There is a document that suggests a much older ancestor, a “vine measure” from 1533, developed by Pierre Maillart, sworn surveyor in Chamery, on behalf of the Abbey of Saint-Nicaise. Today, the ninth generation is in charge with Nicolas, who after studying engineering and oenology, returned in 2003. Thus it perpetuates almost 300 years of history and preserves the philosophy of the house: to express in wines the potential of Champagne terroirs.
